Janette Wipper is Senior Litigation Counsel to Sanford Wittels & Heisler, LLP in the New York Office.
Prior to joining Sanford Wittels & Heisler, LLP, Ms. Wipper served as a civil rights attorney with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. She was also a law clerk with the Texas Civil Rights Project in Austin, Texas. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Wipper worked as an advocate with Acción Ecológica in Ecuador.
Ms. Wipper has extensive experience advocating on behalf of civil rights complainants in the areas of education, employment, environmental justice, fair housing, and voting rights. Her litigation victories include a landmark class action settlement in Washington Park Lead Committee v. U.S. EPA, et al., which successfully relocated an African American community from a segregated housing development located on a Superfund site. She has also drafted numerous amicus curiae briefs in support of civil rights plaintiffs in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including Alexander v. Sandoval and Jackson v. Birmingham Board of Education. In addition to litigation, Ms. Wipper has provided civil rights testimony and policy papers to federal and state agencies, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and the United Nations.
Ms. Wipper graduated with honors from Vermont Law School and the University of Texas at Austin. She is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and Texas.
Ms. Wipper currently serves as an advisory board member to the Advocates for Environmental Human Rights in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the United Puerto Rican Organization of Sunset Park in Brooklyn, New York.
